Our latest exclusive listing is nestled into the lower slopes of Nevis Peak, Hill Rise House looks towards the Caribbean Sea over two acres of terraced tropical gardens. Over 2000 square feet of verandahs wrap around both the Main House and the Guest Cottage, and a series of French windows ensure the outdoor and indoor spaces are seamlessly combined.
In a sought after area of the island, near to the luxury of Montpelier Plantation that played host to the marriage of Nelson and Fanny Nisbet, Hill Rise House is cooled by the constant Trade Winds and watched over by the jungle-clad Peak. The charming bustle of Nevis’ tiny capital, Charlestown, is within easy reach – as are the less-visited beaches tucked away on the southern shores.
A semi-circular driveway joins the two entrance gates and leads through the gardens. Lawns reach away from the house and down towards the restored terraces of a former sugar plantation, now accommodating a beautiful secluded pool and deck area, a floodlit tennis court, and carefully maintained gardens bursting with the plants that provide quintessential Caribbean silhouettes at sunset.
The main house has two ensuite bedrooms, each with wide doors leading out onto secluded areas of the verandah. Living areas are draped in beautiful fabrics from around the world and furnished with antiques dating back to the days of Nelson.
The same stunning views that are afforded by the verandah of the Main House are shared by anyone staying in the nearby Guest Cottage, a beautifully styled two bedroom hideaway buried in the garden’s greenery.
THE MAIN HOUSE
Kitchen
Solid maple furniture, Italian granite worktops and a Spanish tiled floor combine to create an elegant, stylish kitchen. It is fully equipped with gas stove, fridge/freezer with ice maker, dishwasher, microwave and all small appliances. The kitchen is in a separate wing of the house.
Great Room
Antique furnishings come together to create a stunning, unique space. Folding doors lead to the vast wraparound verandah.
Master bedroom with ensuite bathroom
Two queen size beds and antique furnishings make this into an elegant, spacious retreat. Doors lead out to the verandah.
Second bedroom with ensuite bathroom
A mirror of the Master bedroom, this room also has two queen size beds and doors that lead to a secluded area of the verandah.
GUEST COTTAGE
Crafted in a style that emulates the Main House, the guest cottage is a self-contained retreat set in a secluded corner of the gardens. A large master bedroom leads to an internal lobby area that in turn leads to both a bathroom and separate kitchen. The verandah has views as dramatic as those of the Main House.
Outside steps lead down to another double bedroom with ensuite, and double doors lead out into the gardens.
GARDENS
The 2.4 acres of gardens have been crafted into the terraced hillside of the former sugar plantation. These are mature gardens with extensive lawns, a variety of palms and colourful trees and shrubs. The bright flamboyants and draping bougainvillea expected of the Caribbean also feature here.
There is a fixed barbecue, and the terraces can be floodlit for a dramatic nighttime look.
THE POOL PAVILLION
The 40’ x 20’ pool is a short stroll from the house in a secluded part of the terraced gardens. A cabana provides shade, and there is a cold outdoor shower. Reclining chairs and loungers on the deck make this a perfect place for watching the sun as it sets over the Caribbean.
TENNIS COURT
In the far south western corner of the property, the newly resurfaced tennis hard court is landscaped into the hillside. Flood lighting is in place, a thoughtful touch for those who prefer to play in the cool of the evening.
GATE HOUSE
A cottage-style gatehouse is home to both the laundry and the back-up generator. The generator can be turned on by remote control from the kitchen of the Main House.
